Extremely well tolerated by all, babies, children and adults, True or Fine Lavender essential oil, also known as Officinal Lavender, is an essential oil to have in your aromatherapy kit. Renowned for its skin, analgesic, calming and healing properties, it is also suitable for deeper problems of cramps and muscle contractions. Moreover, it regulates the nervous system, calms the excitability and supports the sleep. Finally, its anti-infectious properties reinforce the power of this essential oil with the sweet scent of Provence. Lavender Fine will be softer and more delicate than True Lavender. Their difference lies mainly in their method of cultivation, more in altitude for the Fine Lavender. Latin name: Lavandula officinalis Chaix or Lavandula angustifolia Mill. Distilled part: flowering tops
True Lavender essential oil has no known risks! It is very well tolerated, even by young babies and can be used pure, by all means of administration. However, it contains a significant amount of linalool, which is an allergenic compound, so people with an allergic background must be careful. It is contraindicated in case of strong hypotension. Finally, the asthmatic persons must ask for a medical opinion before its use.
People with asthma should seek medical advice before use.
Although it is one of the mildest, it is necessary to avoid the use of too strong quantities which can give an inversion of the effects: it becomes exciting (nervousness, insomnia).
The use in cutaneous application in babies of more than 3 months and in the sensitive persons must be diluted (20% of essential oil in 80% of vegetable oil).
Be careful to distinguish between True Lavender essential oil and Lavender Aspic essential oil. Their biochemical distributions and restrictions of use have nothing to do with each other!
This essential oil is to be avoided in case of strong hypotension.
True Lavender essential oil contains several allergenic biochemical components in high quantities.
Note: It is preferable to test the essential oil before using it (two drops in the crook of the elbow for at least 24 hours to ensure there is no reaction).
The essential oil of True or Fine Lavender is highly concentrated in linalool and linalyl acetate in particular. These different molecules give it the following main properties:

This large flowering plant grows in dense groves and has a very pleasant smell. Each bush is made up of about ten small robust branches. The people of Provence have been using lavender for hundreds of years. In the cupboards to keep moths away, in honey to give it a flowery taste, in the kitchen to perfume plants, lavender fills the daily life of the South of France.
Under the intense blue sky and the golden sun, more than 2000 growers have been established for generations. They started to cultivate lavender in the first centuries after Jesus Christ, and even more in the Middle Ages. The discovery of its medicinal and olfactory virtues ensured its development throughout Europe. Elixirs, perfumes, sachets: Lavender, lovingly prepared in Provence, travels across the continent. Today, there are about 2000 family businesses proud of their know-how.
A well-tended lavender plantation can flourish for decades! Lavender bushes reach their peak in the fourth year. The best time to harvest lavender is when it is in bloom: in midsummer, between late June and August. It is best to harvest early in the morning when the weather is nice and dry. This allows you to pick the most open and fragrant flowers. Just after the dew, and before the sun is too high, the flowers keep all their fragrances.
The best tool is the pruning shears because they allow to cut the stems in a straight way, optimizing the regrowth of the lavender. This Mediterranean plant grows in full sun on rocky soil, but it also adapts to any good garden soil. It should be pruned every year in autumn after flowering so that it can keep its compact shape.
After picking, it is possible to store fresh lavender in damp paper in the refrigerator for a few days, or dry by keeping a stem of about thirty centimeters and letting them dry in the open air, flat, in a dry and well ventilated environment.
Although they all have the same genus Lavandula, most Lavenders are distinguished by their species, the name that comes right after the genus. This classification establishes the foundation of botany and allows, what interests us most, the obtaining of essential oils as different as each other. To learn more, find out our guide to the different Lavenders.
